We are seeing more and more women hunting for Elk, Deer, Antelope, Black Bear, and Cougar in New Mexico. New Mexico’s drawing system for hunts is based on a quota which allocates big-game hunting opportunities among resident and nonresident hunters. Residents receive 78% of the available licenses for any hunt code. Nonresidents who use registered outfitters will receive up to 12% of the available licenses. Nonresidents who hunt without outfitters will receive up to 10% of the available licenses.

According to the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, no one under 18 years of age may hunt with a firearm before they have attended and passed the New Mexico, or another state’s Hunter Education Course. The Bowhunter Education Course is not mandatory for archery hunts, however it is highly recommended. In fact it is highly recommended that all new hunters regardless of age take the Hunter Education Course for your own safety.

Courses are available year round, however it is advisable to enroll as early as possible. Classes before the draw deadlines and hunting seasons fill quickly. Moon Valley Outfitters can assist with any needs your group may have.

Each hunter education course is approximately sixteen hours in length. During class students must pass a written exam and are tested on their ability to handle firearms safely. Parents with students younger than 10 year old are required to attend the class. Some courses also offer a live fire component.

This program is a partnership between sportsmen and the agencies that manage wildlife and their habitat in New Mexico. Each year licensed hunters, anglers and trappers, use Bureau of Land Management or U. S. Forest Service lands and they are required to buy the stamp from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. These funds are used for habitat conservation and rehabilitation projects.

Because of the efforts of hunters and government land managers we can pass these national treasures on to our children.

New Mexico has it all plus a few, including deer, antelope, black bear, and mountain lion. Now if it’s elk you’re after, the Land of Enchantment has plenty of elk, and some of America’s biggest bull elks. Because of the mild winters and summer monsoons, the elk stay in top shape during the fall hunting season. The state is split into approximately 30 percent “quality” units (big bulls, small odds) and 70 percent “opportunity,” though that’s not to say there aren’t 350-class bulls among those easier-to-draw units. New regulation changes from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish give hunters a little more time to get their bull. Shooting hours were expanded to 30 minutes before sunrise and after sunset.
